Media Literacy in the Digital Age: From Theory to Practice

The course enables participants to acquire creative skills and tools for using multimedia and video production in the classroom. Through practical exercises, participants will learn how to utilize video and create short films for educational purposes. The outcome of the course is that teachers will be trained for independent production of video materials, including filming, editing, and post-production of video lessons.

Day 1: Introduction and Preparation

  • Arrival of participants
  • Welcome meeting: Introduction of participants and overview of the course program
  • Course presentation and objectives
  • Course and instructor introduction: Brief overview of the course and expected outcomes
  • Walking tour of Zagreb: Exploring cultural landmarks

Day 2: Basics of Media Literacy

  • Lecture 1: Introduction to media literacy and its importance in education
  • Lecture 2: How to identify fake news and misinformation
  • Workshop 1: Practical exercises in recognizing fake news using real examples
  • Practical exercises: Analyzing viral content and its impact on society

Day 3: Theory and Practice of Digital Content

  • Lecture 3: Introduction to digital production: From idea to realization
  • Workshop 2: Basics of photography and videography – Using cameras, photo equipment, and drones
  • Workshop 3: Planning and filming a short film: Developing a script and preparation for filming
  • Visit to a local school: Sharing experiences with colleagues from Zagreb and discussing challenges in media literacy in education

Day 4: Creating Digital Content

  • Full-day Workshop 4: Filming short films on location using various equipment (cameras, photo equipment, drones)
  • Workshop on Copyrights: Basics of protecting rights and legal use of media content in education
  • Visit to the WorldSkills Croatia Opening Ceremony

Day 5: Editing and Finalization

  • Workshop 5: Discussion of filming experiences and review of recorded material
  • Workshop 6: Basics of editing: Using software tools for video editing
  • Workshop 7: Post-production: Adding sound, subtitles, and special effects
  • Group work: Editing and finalizing short films

Day 6: Cultural Day

  • Organization of activities will be tailored to the preferences and interests of course participants. Options include exploring Zagreb’s iconic landmarks or taking an excursion to the breathtaking Plitvice Lakes National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage site. Please note that these activities are not included in the course fee and may incur additional costs.

Day 7: Final Day and Evaluation

  • Presentation of final projects: Showcasing and analyzing the short films produced during the workshops
  • Discussion: Feedback and joint evaluation of the course
  • Certificate Awarding: Formal presentation of course completion certificates
  • Final meeting: Reflection on the course and planning for the implementation of acquired knowledge in participants’ schools
  • Exchange of ideas and future collaboration: Networking and planning future projects among participants
